Phnom Penh is the capital and the largest city in Cambodia. Situated on the banks of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers, the city is home to more than 2 million people.

Once known as the “Pearl of Asia”, in the 1920s it was considered one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina. Today Phnom Penh still retaiins some of the wide boulevards a few of the colonial buildings of her past alongside a mix of modern architecture and traditional temples. In the evenings there is a lively area along the riverfront with a restaurants, bars and shops.

Note: Airport transfers and sightseeing are by private vehicle with English speaking guide.

Breakfast at hotel. Enjoy a full day of private sightseeing with your personal guide. The highlight today will include a visit to the Royal Palace, still the official residence of King Norodom Sihamoi and the adjacent Silver Pagoda, also known as the Pagoda of the Emerald Buddha. Continue to the National Museum displaying a comprehensive collection of Khmer art. Enjoy a walk through the lively Central Maket.

This afternoon, journey outside of Phnom Penh to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. A stark reminder of the atrocities committed under the Pol Pot regime. Also learn about a chapter from Cambodia's more recent, tragic, past at the Tuol Sleng Museum (Museum of Genocide). Formerly the Tuol Svay Prey High School, in 1975, this became the interrogation and torture facility for the Khmer Rouge regime - at that time known as Security Prison 21, or simply S-21. Kept largely unchanged, this prison now showcases photographs and exhibits about the thousands of victims that passed through these doors - only seven of whom came out alive.

Return to your hotel, evening at leisure.
