What Is A “Independent Adventure Tour”?
For the most part, a Independent Adventure Tour is a “Self-Guided Tour, they are designed for people who don't need a lot of hand holding, but want to leave nothing to chance. We make all the arrangements for you, train and bus tickets (when the tour includes a Japan Rail Pass, you have to make your own train reservations), guided sightseeing tours where available, hotel accommodations, and we provide you with written instructions every step of the way.
Before you leave home you will receive a tour book created just for you along with a daily itinerary. Your information book includes instructions on how to ride the trains and buses, about dining, cultural information and self-guided sightseeing suggestions for each city you will visit. We also include train station maps; city maps showing your hotel, train stations and sightseeing spots; plus a hotel information sheet for every hotel with the name and address in both English and Japanese along with instructions on how to reach each hotel.
We have been a pioneer when it comes to independent travel in Japan and we've been doing this a long time, next year will be our 25th anniversary. Our tour itineraries may feature a path less taken, but we think that‘s the way to really experience a country. Day 1: Kyoto To Nagoya To Takayama By Shinkansen (Bullet Train) & Local Express Train (Tickets Included)
Transfer on your own to Kyoto Station. Board Bullet train for Nagoya on your own. Change train at Nagoya for Takayama, an ancient city dubbed “Little Kyoto” on your own. Get off at Takayama Station and walk down the street to your hotel on your own. Remainder of day on your own to stroll the ancient streets of Kami Sannimachi. These three narrow streets are lined with traditional Japanese wooden buildings that house stores selling traditional wares, craftsmen’s workshops and restaurants.

Day 2: Takayama Day At Leisure
Complete day at leisure to explore Takayama on your own. There is a lively morning market located along the Miyagawa River where local farmers and craftsmen sell their produce and handicrafts. You may choose to visit the Kusakabe Folkcraft Museum, built in 1897, it is a superb example of traditional Takayama architecture. Take a walk through Shiroyama Park or perhaps visit Hida Kokubunji Temple, the ouldest temple in the city, only a 5 minuet walk from the station. |

Day 3: Takayama To Shirakawago By Highway Bus (Bus Ticket Included) (JD)
This morning walk to the Bus Stop in front of Takayama Station and board a bus on your own for a scenic drive to Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its unique farmhouses called Gassho-Zukuri or joined-hands farmhouses. There are over 100 traditional style buildings in this toww, many over 200 years old and all with the unusual steep pitched thatched roofs. Sightseeing on your own this afternoon. This evening you will stay in a Minsuku, the Japanese equivalent to a Bed & Breakfast. The inn only has 3 bedrooms so it won’t be crowed, the bathroom is shared by all the guests and dinner will be served by Mrs. Shimizu the owner and your hostess for your stay.

Day 4: Shirakawago to Kanazawa By Highway Bus (Bus Ticket Included) (JB)
This morning enjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast before walking back to the bus terminal where you will board a bus to Kanazawa. Upon arrival at Kanazawa Station, your hotel is only a 3 minute walk away. This afternoon is free for you to explore Kanazawa on your own. Highlights: Kenrokuen Garden (1 of 3 best traditional gardens in Japan), Seisonkaku Mansion, Museum for Traditional Products & Crafts, Kosenyo pottery kiln (Kutani), Saihitsuan (Kaga Yuzen Dyeing factory) and the Nagamachi district of samurai houses. Take a walk down Chaya-machi street, lined with former Geisha housed built in the early 19th century or stroll through the bustling Omicho open-air market.

Day 5: Kanazawa To Kyoto By Express Train (Ticket Included)
This morning is at leisure for you to continue your independent sightseeing of Kanazawa. This afternoon walk to Kanazawa Station and board train for the classical city of Kyoto on your own. Tour services end upon arrival at Kyoto Station. |
